We were blown away by how kind and helpful every employee we encountered was. Getting through the gate was quick and easy, and from the moment we walked in, it truly felt like stepping into a real jungle with the lush plants, birds chirping, and relaxing waterfalls everywhere. The atmosphere was so peaceful and immersive.
The animals were incredible and did the coolest things! Some of the highlights were hearing a leopard roar, seeing a crocodile underwater with its mouth wide open, and watching the monkeys be so sweet and playful. We especially loved how close you can get to many of the animals — it made the whole experience feel so special. The app also made it really easy to find the animals we wanted to see.
My family and I had an absolute blast and made such fun memories here. We also really appreciated the free drink refills, which were such a nice bonus during the day. Thank you for such an amazing experience! Best Zoo day ever!

What made this visit special? Is this is my first time in San Diego and I was here for the graduation of my son, who was in the Marines. He wanted to go visit the ship. I had no idea what I was in store for but I was blown away by all of it. Seeing what these men and women did to serve our country. How many people sacrifice their lives for ours, and just the rich history and knowledge of different wars, planes P.O.W. and the soldiers that lost their lives serving our country. Also, what it takes to make the ship run, how important it is for everyone on the ship to do their job. It was a very memorable moment for me and my son, who will be shipped off soon. I will be coming back. I didn't get to look at the entire ship because there is a lot to see. But I was very happy and more knowledgeable of things. When I left, I definitely will be coming back.

We bought the zoo and safari zoo package. What a treat!!! I highly recommend the train and bus rides (one at each site) as this means you get to see more than on foot (especially if you have a 5 and 3 year old in tow!!!

Duration: ~35 minutes
Reservation: Not required; tour is first-come, first-served

Why choose a guided bus tour
See the zoo before walking
A guided bus tour gives you a clear overview of this 100-acre zoo before you commit to a route on foot. Your onboard guide leads the narrated ride through major habitats and helps you spot which zones matter most to your group, whether that’s koalas, polar bears, or elephants.
Save energy for favorite habitats
San Diego Zoo is large, and some sections are hilly. Starting with the guided bus tour lets you cover more ground early, so you can spend your walking time in the exhibits you care about most instead of using it just to get oriented.
Understand what you’re seeing faster
Plaques tell you names. A live guided overview helps connect habitats, species, and conservation stories in a way that’s easier to absorb on a first visit. Your onboard guide frames the zoo’s layout and resident animals, so the rest of the day feels more focused.
Build a better full-day plan
The guided bus tour works best as a first move because it helps you time the rest of your day around the Skyfari aerial tram, keeper talks, meals, and high-interest exhibits. If you’re also checking San Diego Zoo hours, this makes it easier to judge how much you can fit in.
What to expect on a guided bus tour of San Diego Zoo
1/5
Enter the zoo and head to the guided bus tour
Your day starts with zoo entry, where mobile vouchers let you bypass the admission ticket window and proceed to the entrance. The guided bus tour line is separate, so arrive with enough time to enter, clear any bag check, and board without rushing. Starting early gives you the best orientation for the rest of the visit.
Ride a narrated overview across the zoo
The guided bus tour lasts about 35 minutes and introduces large sections of the zoo in one continuous ride. An onboard guide narrates the route with context on habitats, animals, and conservation work, while you stay seated and get a broad sense of where the elephants, African zones, and northern exhibits sit within the park.
Use the overview to choose your walking route
Once the bus tour ends, the zoo becomes easier to navigate because you’ve already seen the park’s major zones from above road level. That’s the moment to decide whether to walk to Australia for the koalas, head toward Elephant Odyssey, or use the Skyfari aerial tram to cut down on uphill walking.
Continue with tram rides, exhibits, and keeper talks
Your ticket also includes the Skyfari aerial tram, Kangaroo Express transportation, and access to all scheduled shows and exhibits. That means the guided portion acts as your introduction, not the whole experience. You can spend the rest of the day revisiting favorite habitats on foot and timing your stops around live presentations.
Stay as long as the zoo is open
The bus tour is only one part of the day, and most visitors continue exploring well after it ends. If you want a shorter visit, use the guided ride as your main overview and then focus on 2–3 priority areas. If you have a full day, it becomes the framework for a much broader visit.
Guided tour vs. audio guide
The bus tour gives you a structured overview of this large, hilly zoo, plus live narration that helps first-time visitors understand the layout before choosing where to spend time. A self-guided visit gives you more flexibility to linger wherever you want. If you prefer orientation first and independent exploring after, the guided format usually makes the day easier.
Highlights covered on the tour
Elephant Odyssey
Location: West side, Elephant Odyssey loop
A large multi-species zone centered on African elephants, with interpretive links to Southern California’s prehistoric wildlife and changing landscapes.
Things to keep in mind when you go on a bus tour
Parking: Main zoo parking is on-site; non-member parking is paid separately at $16 per vehicle, per day.
Stroller rental: Available near the entrance for families planning a long day across the zoo’s large footprint.
Wheelchair and ECV rental: Available near entry; useful because some zoo paths are long or hilly.
Dining: Multiple eateries operate during the zoo day; Treetops Cafe is one of the better-known in-park options.
In-park transport: The guided bus tour, Kangaroo Express, and Skyfari aerial tram help reduce backtracking and uphill walking.
Mobile ticket: Lets you bypass the admission ticket window and go directly to the entrance.
Water bottle: Useful on warmer days, especially if you’re combining walking routes with bus and tram rides.
Sun protection: Large parts of the zoo are outdoors, so a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses help during midday hours.
Comfortable shoes: The zoo covers 100 acres, and even with transport, you’ll still do a fair amount of walking.
Light layer: Coastal San Diego mornings can start cool before warming up later in the day.
ID: Bring it if your booking uses any discounted eligibility that may need to be checked.
Proper clothing required: Shoes and shirts must be worn at all times inside the zoo.
Pets policy: Pets are not allowed at the zoo, but guide dogs are welcome.
Bus line expectations: Your voucher skips the admission ticket line, not the guided bus or Skyfari lines.
Follow boarding instructions: Guided bus and tram access run on operational queues, so follow staff directions at each station.
Respect exhibit boundaries: Stay on public paths and behind barriers throughout the zoo.
Stroller policy: Strollers are not permitted on board, but stroller parking is available near the queue.
Acceptable: Shirts, shoes, shorts, pants, skirts, and other standard daywear suitable for a full outdoor visit.
Not acceptable: Bare feet, bare chest, or clothing that does not meet the zoo’s requirement for proper attire.
Start with the guided bus tour: It’s the fastest way to understand the zoo’s layout before committing to long walking loops.
Use the Skyfari strategically: Ride it after the bus overview to save time and avoid repeating uphill sections.
Plan popular areas earlier: Koalas, polar bears, and major family zones feel easier in the first half of the day.
Leave margin for lines: Entry may be quick with a mobile ticket, but bus and tram lines still build later in the day.
Consider a full-day pace: The guided tour is short, but the zoo itself is large enough to justify several more hours afterwards.
Wheelchair access: The zoo is wheelchair-accessible, with paved routes and support services for longer visits.
Mobility rentals: Wheelchairs and ECVs are available near the entrance for visitors who want extra support.
Walking reduction: The guided bus tour, Kangaroo Express, and Skyfari aerial tram help limit unnecessary walking.
Terrain note: Parts of the zoo are hilly, so transport options matter more here than at smaller attractions.
Family suitability: The guided bus tour works well for children because it adds structure before you move into walking-heavy sections.
Frequently asked questions about San Diego Zoo guided bus tours
Yes. San Diego Zoo tickets include entry to the zoo, the guided bus tour, Kangaroo Express transportation, the Skyfari aerial tram, and access to shows and exhibits. You do not need to buy a separate guided bus ticket for the standard zoo visit.
The guided bus tour lasts about 35 minutes. It’s designed as an overview rather than a deep-dive experience, so most visitors use it early in the day to understand the zoo’s layout before heading back on foot to the habitats they want to explore more closely.
No. The guided bus tour is built into the standard zoo admission product sold here. Both San Diego Zoo tickets and the zoo portion of the San Diego Zoo & Safari Park 2-Visit Pass include the guided bus tour as part of the experience.
No. Your voucher lets you bypass the admission ticket window and proceed directly to the entrance, but it does not skip the guided bus or Skyfari lines. Those lines operate separately, so earlier boarding usually means a smoother start.
Take it at the start of your visit if this is your first time at the zoo. The tour helps you understand where major zones sit across the 100-acre property, which makes the rest of your day more efficient and helps you decide whether to prioritize koalas, elephants, polar bears, or family areas.
Quite a bit, unless you keep using transport options. The bus tour covers a broad overview, but exploring exhibits afterward still means walking through a large, sometimes hilly zoo. The Skyfari aerial tram and Kangaroo Express can cut down on repeated climbs and long cross-park stretches.
Yes. It works especially well for families because it gives children a structured first look at the zoo before the longer walking portion begins. After the ride, many families head to koalas, major habitat zones, or Wildlife Explorers Basecamp depending on energy levels and interest.
Yes. It’s one of the easiest ways to experience a large share of the zoo without covering the distance on foot. Combined with wheelchair access, rentals near the entrance, Kangaroo Express, and the Skyfari aerial tram, it makes the zoo more manageable for slower-paced visits.
Yes. The same admission product that includes the guided bus tour also includes the Skyfari aerial tram. Many visitors ride the bus first for orientation, then use the tram later to save time and avoid repeating long uphill sections of the zoo.
Yes. That’s the main benefit of this format. The bus gives you a structured overview first, then you can spend the rest of the day revisiting the exhibits that interested you most, using the tram, catching keeper talks, and setting your own pace.
It can be, if you already know you want more than one wildlife visit. The San Diego Zoo & Safari Park 2-Visit Pass includes the zoo admission features you’d get with San Diego Zoo tickets, including the guided bus tour, while also giving you a second visit to use at the Safari Park or zoo.
